Location: Crows Nest, Sydney, Australia

The complex at 200-220 Pacific Highway in Crows Nest is a mixed use development consisting of retail on the ground floor, serviced apartments at level 1, within the proposed new building fronting the Pacific Highway and residential apartments on other levels. The complex is located along the Pacific Highway and it is bonded by other three major roads such as Rocklands Road on the south, Bruce Street on the north and Sinclair Street on the west. The residential component of the Pacific Highway complex has been designed so as to provide natural and mechanical ventilation and includes a breathable external façade at the front to allow cross-ventilation. The retail instead are mechanically ventilated. In addition to controlling noise from building services serving the retails and potentially affecting the residential units and establishing the sound insulation and impact noise isolation for floors that separate sole-occupancy units or a sole-occupancy unit from a plant room, lift shaft, stairway and public circulation areas, the acoustic design focused in the achievement of ambient noise criteria within the apartment spaces with natural ventilation and therefore with open windows. The natural ventilation strategy proposed by JPR Architects consisted in enclosing the terrace facing Pacific Highway with a full height openable glass louvre and ventilate the bedroom via an openable window and door to the terrace.
